About

Anda Kubis is a recognized Canadian abstract painter. Working in large-scale oil painting and 2D digital practices, Anda’s work demonstrates a commitment to aesthetics and creativity as integral to quality of life.

Evocative of idyllic landscapes or microscopic imagery, Anda’s abstract paintings provoke perception and conjure a wide range of associations. She uses bright colour to reflect an entirely contemporary world - one that is seen with light yet is shaped by the invisibility of our digital/technological tools. Influenced by her father Eduard Peter Kubis, a modern furniture designer from Latvia, Anda’s artwork is founded upon the tenets of modernism – notably a belief in aesthetics as they are shaped by new technologies, science, material experimentation, and human flourishing. Fully aware of the critical debates that surround this era, Anda’s artwork infuses contemporary awareness with painterly richness to create artworks that resolutely evoke a sense of joy and visual play.

With a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and an MFA from York University, Toronto. As a professor at OCAD University, she teaches at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In her 30+ educational career, she is an advocate for innovation, internationalization, and creative entrepreneurship that’s focussed upon wellness and positive social contribution. Anda has held professorial and administrative roles as the Chair of the Drawing and Painting Program, OCAD U; Associate Dean, Outreach and Innovation in the Faculty of Art, OCAD U; Dean/Director of the Haliburton School of Art + Design in Peterborough and Haliburton; and at OCAD U as the Chair of Criticism & Curatorial Practice, Cross-Disciplinary Art Practices, and Art & Social Change.
