ABOUT

Anda Kubis is a recognized Canadian abstract painter, working in expanded digital and large scale oil painting. Through her artwork she considers how engagement with aesthetics and creativity positively impacts human flourishing and quality of life.

Evocative of idyllic spaces or microscopic imagery Anda’s paintings provoke perception and conjure a wide range of associations. She uses colour to reflect an entirely contemporary world – a world perceived with light - concrete and natural, yet now modelled by the invisible forces of the digital. Her father Eduard Peter Kubis, a Post-war European furniture designer, introduced Anda to Modernist ideals - notably the belief in aesthetics as they are shaped by progressive notions of new technologies, material experimentation, and humanism. Informed by these tenets, Anda makes work firmly situated within the 21st century. By making perceptually active paintings with a variety of digital and analog tools that she has at hand, she also Investigates the impact of art on society through the intersection of creativity, psychology, behavioural economics, science, and digital culture.

Anda Kubis attained a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and an MFA from York University. She has been a committed art educator since 1992, having taught painting, drawing, and contemporary issues at York University and the University of Lethbridge. In 2000, she began her career at OCAD University, where she has held administrative roles as the Chair of the Drawing and Painting Program (2009-2013), and Associate Dean, Outreach and Innovation in the Faculty of Art (2014-17). As Associate Professor at OCADU, she teaches upper level undergraduate and graduate students while pursuing a prolific studio practice.

Anda Kubis has shown widely in North America and Europe. Her artwork is represented commercially in Canada by Bau-Xi Gallery, in Toronto and Vancouver, Newzones Gallery of Contemporary Art in Calgary, and in Sweden by Galleri Tapper-Popermajer.
